While the U.S. Secretary of State was traveling to the Middle East to express support for Israel and meet with Arab leaders, including Palestinians, Israel struck Gaza throughout the course of the night, claiming that it had targeted an elite Hamas unit that had organised the fatal weekend attacks. Regarding the captives, the International Committee of the Red Cross claimed to be in contact with both Israel and Hamas. The Israeli military reports that there have been 1,200 deaths, 2,700 injuries, and hundreds of hostages abducted. According to Gaza’s Health Ministery and reports in Palestinian media, there have already been 1,200 confirmed fatalities and 5,600 confirmed injuries in Gaza.
Israel has imposed a „total siege” on Gaza in order to prevent food and fuel from reaching the 2.3 million residents of the territory, many of whom are in need of relief. According to Hamas propaganda, power was turned off when the sole power plant failed. In Gaza, there were over 340,000 homeless people living in damaged streets or shelters authorized by the UN. Israeli Artillery shelled southern Lebanese communities in reaction to another Hezbollah missile attack. The Israeli military stated that it will not, as usual, publicize the number of Palestinian rockets from Gaza that were intercepted. It was worried that Hamas might benefit from such knowledge. Israeli troops and civilians are being held prisoner by Hamas terrorists, who have promised to kill one hostage for every home in Gaza that is suddenly attacked. There was no evidence that Hamas had followed through on their threat.

In retaliation for the bloodiest attack on Jews since the Holocaust, in which hundreds of gunmen stormed into Israeli cities on Saturday, Israel has pledged to completely destroy the Hamas organisation, that controls the Gaza Strip.
